The American Dental Association (ADA) will welcome President Bill Clinton to the 154th Annual Session and World Marketplace Exhibition for the 2013 Opening General Session and Distinguished Speaker Series Thursday, Oct. 31 at the New Orleans  Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Dentists interested in complementing their clinical training and experience with enhanced management skills can register for the 2013 session of the prestigious American Dental Association (ADA) and Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management’s "ADA/Kellogg Executive Management Program." Applications are due July 1.

The ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry is accepting applications for the 2013 Evidence-Based Dentistry Champions Conference scheduled for April 25-27 at ADA Headquarters, 211 E. Chicago Ave., in Chicago.

The American Dental Association today announced the availability of a new video providing a comprehensive view of the community dental health coordinator (CHDC) project. The video is available on ADA.org and YouTube. It features interviews with educators, CDHCs and clinic personnel, and shows the CDHCs working in a variety of underserved urban, rural and Native American communities.

Registration is open for dentists and dental students to attend the American Dental Association (ADA) 27th New Dentist Conference — Climbing to New Heights, which takes place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Denver July 18-20.

The American Dental Association (ADA) and Smile Kentucky! are collaborating with Henry Schein Dental, the U.S. Dental business of Henry Schein, Inc., Colgate-Palmolive Co., and DEXIS, LLC, to kick off this year’s national Give Kids A Smile® program on Friday, Feb. 1, at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in Kentucky.

“Requirements for a pediatric dental benefit in the Affordable Care Act’s health care exchanges would ensure that millions of children receive comprehensive oral health coverage through the private system of health exchanges,” said Robert Faiella, DMD, MMSc, president of the American Dental Association. Dr. Faiella spoke in response to recent calls by business groups and insurers for the government to trim the essential benefits—including dental benefits—that the ACA requires insurers to offer.

CHICAGO—The American Dental Association (ADA) is very pleased by the agreed upon provisions related to dental amalgam included in the United Nations Environment Program proposed mercury treaty. The report “Falling Short: Most States Lag on Dental Sealants,” released today by the Pew Center on the States, highlights the degree to which a significant number of states are lagging in providing this proven decay-fighting measure to children, especially in those underserved populations.

A report published today in the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Dental Association details a nearly year-long systematic review of scientific papers about the use of non dentists, generally referred to as midlevel dental providers, to perform such irreversible surgical procedures as restorations (fillings) and extractions.

The ADA Code of Ethics states that “professionals have a duty to act for the benefit of others. Under this principle, the dentist's primary obligation is service to the patient and the public-at-large. The most important aspect of this obligation is the competent and timely delivery of dental care within the bounds of clinical circumstances presented by the patient, with due consideration being given to the needs, desires and values of the patient. The same ethical considerations apply whether the dentist engages in fee-for-service, managed care or some other practice arrangement.  Dentists may choose to enter into contracts governing the provision of care to a group of patients; however, contract obligations do not excuse dentists from their ethical duty to put the patient's welfare first.”

In an effort to decrease radiation exposure to patients, the American Dental Association’s (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs collaborated with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to update the ADA’s recommendations for dental X-ray examinations. The recommendations were released this week.

In 2013, the American Dental Association will transition to a private use library with a scope of services that were deemed most valuable by ADA members. The ADA created questions and answers regarding this issue.
