Adopt-a-Practice: Rebuilding Dental Offices in Haiti

IMAGE: Dr. Vadna Georges

On January 12, 2010, a regular day at Hope Dental Clinic, we could not imagine that our world would be torn apart in a few seconds. We would be grateful forever for your help through “Adopt-a-Practice.” This will allow us young dentists to stay in our country to provide basic oral services to our community and our patients.

Get matched and sponsor Dr. Georges or one of her colleagues today.

January 12 marked the one year anniversary of the worst earthquake to ever hit Haiti, which left one million homeless, 300,000 injured and killed an estimated 230,000 people. With nearly a third of the dental offices still destroyed, organized dentistry needs to rally to help Haitian dentists rebuild their practices so they can provide much-needed oral health care to their communities.

The ADA and Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) launched Adopt-a-Practice: Rebuilding Dental Offices in Haiti, a fundraising effort to raise $350,000 to rebuild the 35 dental offices that were destroyed in Port au Prince.

How Can Societies Help?

Make a difference and get your members involved either by:

  1. Committing to adopt a practice as a dental society and raise $10,000 collectively. Members can remit donations to the society and the society can make a lump sum donation on behalf of the members. Dental Societies will be matched with a Haitian dentist in need and will be featured in a future issue of ADA News. A communications plan, fundraising ideas and customizable tactics are below.
  2. Promoting the Adopt-a-Practice program through your society communications with the ready-to-use ad, flyer, letter, article copy and communications plan. Your members can make a donation directly on the HVO website.
  3. Reach out to dental students with Dollars for Dentistry. NEW!

If you need assistance or have questions, please contact Briana Fitzgerald, in the ADA Division of Global Affairs.

Sponsor a Practice as a Dental Society

Your dental society can demonstrate its solidarity by committing to Adopt-a-Practice together. The goal is to raise $10,000 by September 1, 2011. Your society can use the customizable promotional materials below, along with the communications plan that outlines a suggested timeframe and additional fundraising ideas. This initiative is a great way for your members to give to colleagues in a way that is tangible, is a team effort and will make a significant difference to so many who are in dire need for basic care. Dental societies that participate will be featured in a future of ADA News and be recognized at the 2011 ADA Annual Session in Las Vegas.

Dollars for Dentistry

The Dollars for Dentistry campaign allows dental students to participate by donating as little as one dollar to the cause. Use the ads in your communications to dental students and/or the flyer at an upcoming dental student function. Help dental students satisfy their desire to give back by promoting the Haiti initiative – it’s easy and if every dental student gave $1, two dental offices could be rebuilt.
