All content in The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) and the ADA News and related works is copyrighted by the American Dental Association.

No content may be reproduced in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying, scanning, recording or by any information storage and retrieval system, without requesting permission. Permission is never granted to allow use of ADA owned content, logos or covers for endorsements, implied or otherwise, of third-party products or services, or as part of advertisements or advertising supplements.

Requests to translate JADA or ADA News articles are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Please submit your request in writing, using the "JADA Permissions Request Form for Translations" below.

Permissions granted by the ADA’s Publishing Division or the Copyright Clearance Center apply only to copyrighted material that the American Dental Association owns, and not to any copyrighted materials or illustrations owned by third parties, that may be incorporated into the material requested; the requester must seek permission directly from the original publisher or copyright owner.

All borrowed material must contain the following credit line: author, article title, journal name, year, volume and page numbers and "Copyright © [year of publication] American Dental Association. All rights reserved. Reprinted by permission.”

Permission Requests for ADA Copyrighted Material from The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA)

The ADA does not allow full-text reproduction of JADA articles on any public Web site other than the American Dental Association’s own Web site, located at URL: www.ada.org. However, linking is permitted to www.ada.org’s Web pages, subject to the terms and conditions listed listed in the ADA’s Terms of Use.

A. Requests to Copyright Clearance Center

For usages other than the ones indicated in Section B, JADA content permission requests should be directed to the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC). The CCC also offers annual license agreements to academic institutions and companies.

Instructions for requesting permission from the CCC are as follows:

  1. Go online to the Copyright Clearance Center at www.copyright.com
  2. Enter JADA’s ISSN number, 00028177, in the “Get Permission” field.
  3. Select the way content will be re-used from the drop-down menu and follow the subsequent steps.
  4. Create an account if one does not currently exist.
  5. Accept the terms and conditions and permission will be granted and a fee assessed.

B. Requests to the Publishing Division, American Dental Association

Permission for the following usages requires requests be submitted in writing (using the forms below) to the Publishing Division, American Dental Association:

Republication of full-text JADA articles, article excerpts, quotes from articles or pages from JADA articles in another electronic or print publication.

Translation of tables, figures and illustrations.

All permissions are granted for one-time usage only, and a fee may be assessed. Permission will not be granted over the phone, or within one month of publication of the material in JADA.

To receive a prompt reply, please send your completed form to the ADA’s Publishing Division via mail, fax or e-mail as shown below. Each request will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Single Copies of JADA and ADA News Articles

A. Single Copies of JADA Articles from 1995 Onward: Full-text JADA articles from 1995 to the present may be found on the ADA’s Web site at http://jada.ada.org.

1. ADA members and paid JADA subscribers have full access free of charge to all issues and all content in the JADA Online archive.

2. The following content is free to all visitors at all times:

  • Table of Contents and Abstracts
  • Critical Summaries
  • Ethical Moment
  • News
  • For the Dental Patient
  • Supplements
  • Government-funded articles published more than 12 months previous and back to 2000

3. All non-members and non-JADA subscribers must pay an access fee per article for all articles not listed in item 2. above.

B. Single Copies of Pre-1995 JADA Articles and ADA News Articles

If you wish to obtain single copies of pre-1995 JADA articles or any past ADA News articles for personal use only, please review the ADA Library’s services and fees, or call the library at 312-440-2653.
