New payment methods require scrutiny

Some insurance carriers and dental benefit plans are now using an alternative method to pay dental offices in lieu of paper checks. It's called VPay.

VPay is a virtual stored-value debit card program designed specifically for claims payments.

Because the Department of Health and Human Services has recently taken a more aggressive approach to HIPAA Privacy and Security enforcement, now is a good time for dentists who use HIPAA standard electronic transactions to review their current policies, procedures, training programs, and documentation. It is also a good time to identify any weaknesses and ameliorate them before they become major problems.
