Unsolicited Grant Proposals
The ADA Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals outside of its Request for Proposal programs announced via the Web site. The Foundation gives grants to non-profit organizations only and does not give grants to individuals.

Community Dentistry Award
Submission Deadline: Program Temporarily Suspended
In January 15, 2008, the ADA Council on Access, Prevention, and Interprofessional Relations recommended that the Geriatric Oral Health Care Award and the Community Dentistry Award be suspended for at least a year to revamp the programs and their marketing features. The availability of the awards programs will be announced after revisions in the program features have been made.

The E. Bud Tarrson Access to Oral Health Care Award
Submission Deadline: Awarded every fall by an ADAF Committee. Application process is through the ADA's Council on Access Prevention and Interprofessional Relations' Access Recognition Reward. Applicants must first receive the Access Recognition Reward to be nominated for this award.
The Tarrson Award recognizes an individual who enhances access to care to the grassroots level. Individuals who have received the ADA Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations' Access Recognition Award are automatically qualified to be a possible award recipient. A $2,500 grant is donated in the recipient's honor to a charitable dental program of his or her choice. Linda C. Tarrson, Mr. Tarrson's widow, donated a $100,000 gift to the ADA Foundation to establish the award in memory of her husband, Bud Tarrson, past owner and chairman of the board of the John O. Butler Co.

Edward B. Shils Award
Submission Deadline: Awarded every Spring by Nominating Committee/ No Application Process.
The ADA Foundation provides administrative support for the Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Education Fund, which was established to recognize more than 50 years of service to dental industry by Dr. Shils. Each year, the Fund recognizes individuals, organization or programs that have significantly and positively affected the dental community, utilizing a closed application process. The Shils Fund also provides program support for an annual entrepreneurial talk given in memory of Dr. Shils. Awardees are selected by the Shils Fund Advisory Committee. Gold Medal Award
Submission Deadline: This award will be presented again in 2009. Please contact Carol Balabanow for application information.
The Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research was established to honor individuals who through basic or clinical research contribute to the advancement of the profession of dentistry or to major improvement in the oral health of the community. A gold medallion and $25,000 award are presented every third year; the next award presentation will be in 2009. This program is made possible by Church & Dwight and a grant from the American Dental Association. Norton M. Ross Award
Submission Deadline: May 2, 2008
The Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research was established to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions in clinical investigations that have advanced the diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention of craniofacial-oral-dental diseases as well as outstanding research endeavors in other areas. This program is made possible by the American Dental Association through the ADA Foundation with the generous support of Johnson & Johnson Oral Health Products brand. Young Investigators Award
Submission Deadline: April 1, 2008. Check back in early 2008 for application details.
The ADAF Paffenbarger Research Center (PRC) annually appoints two young investigators to its summer scholars program. The program, begun in 1940, brings industrial and dental researchers together in an environment outside the dental school. This program is made possible by Dentsply International. Individuals interested in learning more about the program, application process or deadlines are invited to contact PRC summer scholars program coordinator, Gretchen Duppins at gretchen.duppins@nist.gov.

Fellowships
American Association for Dental Research (AADR)
Each fellowship award totals $3,000, which includes a stipend, supplies and travel funds so that the recipient may present research results at the annual AADR meeting. Funding for these fellowships is made possible through several partner sponsors. Dental students interested in participating in this program should contact the AADR .

Hillenbrand Fellowship
Submission Deadline: End of February 2009. Check back in fall 2008 for application details.
Awarded every other year, our Hillenbrand Fellowship is designed to introduce practicing dentists to national career paths in health policy leadership and management. The 12-month internship (September- August) focuses on non-clinical organizational experience and education and gives fellows intensive orientation to all ADA agencies and departments, orientation to other organizations serving oral health, a basic orientation to federal and state government agencies playing key roles in oral health, academic courses and project experience.
Our current Hillenbrand Fellow is Dr. Richard Quinn Dufurrena. Quinn’s Background includes four years in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. He served as diplomat to Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil in 1986 and was the U.S./British liaison dental officer in Scotland from 1987-1990. Practicing Dentistry in rural Spring Creek, Nev., organized dentistry and community-based projects; he is also busy finishing up a law degree and has a pilot’s license.

Research Training Fellowships
Great West Research Training Fellowship
This Research Training Fellowship program is conducted at the ADAF Paffenbarger Research Center (PRC). The program includes a full-time fellow working in conjunction with the PRC's scientific research staff. This program is made possible by the Great-West Life and Annuity Insurance Company. Dentsply International Research Fellowship
Finalists in the Annual Dental Student Research Competition conducted by Dentsply International are eligible to apply for this 10-week research opportunity. The recipient receives a $4,000 stipend plus room and board expenses in order to work in the Foundation’s Paffenbarger Research Center located in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Applications are made available at the dental school research advisor and/or dean’s office.

Grants
Samuel Harris Fund For Children's Dental Health Grants Program
Submission Deadline: July 17, 2008
The ADA Foundation established a permanent endowment fund dedicated to the prevention of childhood caries and oral health for children. The Harris Fund awards competitive grants of up to $5,000 to non-profit applicant programs whose oral health promotion initiatives are designed to improve and maintain children’s oral health through community intervention.

Disaster Assistance Grant Program
The purpose of ADA Foundation Disaster Assistance Grant Program is to provide assistance to members of the dental profession who are victims of disasters and support provision of emergency dental care in areas affected by disasters. The ADA Foundation provides disaster grants in the following areas:
- Grants to dentists who have been affected by disasters to assist with
immediate needs
- Grants to organizations which can provide dental services to affected areas
For Dentists
Applications and Rules for dentists are provided below for Disaster Grant Applicants. A dentist must submit the application directly to their component or constituent dental society.

For Non-Profit Organizations
501(c)(3) organizations that can provide needed dental care in
communities affected by a disaster are eligible to submit a written request for support funds directly to the ADA Foundation. For further details, please see the Disaster Grant Program Rules below.

Note: Rules are designed to facilitate the administration of the disaster grant programs under the auspices of the ADA Foundation. These Rules shall govern all applications for, and approval of, all disaster grants arranged through the ADA Foundation. The ADA Foundation Board of Directors may amend these Rules at its sole discretion.

Relief Grant Program
Submission Deadline: Rolling
The purpose of the ADA Foundation Relief Grant Program is to provide financial assistance to dentists and their dependents who, because of accidental injury, a medical condition or advanced age, are not self-supporting.

Educational Retraining Loans
Submission Deadline: Rolling
Our educational retraining loans provide financial assistance to dentists, who require retraining due to a disabling accident or illness. These loans are designed to defray some of the costs for book, tuition and institutional fees involved in educational retraining. The rules and application form are provided below.
