What are denture adherents?
Denture adherents (also called denture adhesives) are creams, powders, wafers or strips that are used as a temporary measure to hold dentures firmly in place. The adherent is applied to clean dentures that are then positioned in the mouth and held in place for a few moments. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for applying the adherent.
Why would a denture wearer use this product?
A film of saliva helps hold dentures in place. If the saliva glands produce inadequate saliva, your dentist may recommend using a denture adherent temporarily to help stabilize the dentures. The denture adherent holds dentures in place while you chew or speak. Denture adherents also help form a seal that keeps food particles from sticking between the dentures and gums. Will I need to wear a denture adherent?
Before you buy a denture product, talk to your dentist. Denture adherents are not the solution for old or ill-fitting dentures. A denture that fits poorly and causes constant irritation over a long period, may contribute to the development of mouth sores. Such dentures may need to be relined or replaced. If your dentures begin to feel loose, or cause pronounced discomfort, make an appointment with your dentist.
