Association Urges Indian Health Service to Implement CDHC Program in Lower 48 States

The ADA last week asked the Indian Health Service (IHS) to consider building on the success of community health representatives (CHRs) in native communities in the lower 48 states by implementing the community dental health coordinator (CDHC) workforce model.
“CDHCs understand the needs and realities of the at-risk communities they serve,” wrote ADA President Dr. Carol Gomez Summerhays, in a July 12 letter to Alec Thundercloud, M.D., director of the IHS Office of Clinical and Preventive Services. “They address the complicated barriers that keep people from care by helping overcome cultural, linguistic and geographical obstacles, as well as income disparities.”
