ADA-Backed Mike Simpson Beats Back Tea Party Challenger in Republican Primary
May 21, 2014
In a win for the nation's dental health, Rep. Mike Simpson of Idaho, one of only two dentists in Congress, handily won the Republican primary yesterday, overcoming a challenge by a far-right candidate who claimed that Rep. Simpson was "too liberal for Idaho." Rep. Simpson is an ADA member and the organization supports his campaign for reelection.
The primary race in Idaho's 2nd District received national attention because it so perfectly fit the narrative of a mainstream Republican challenged by a tea party insurgent. It was also an extremely expensive race for both sides. In the end, however, challenger Bryan Smith came in a distant second, with incumbent Rep. Simpson receiving 62 percent of the vote.
