It's electric: Oral-B powered toothbrushes earn ADA Seal

October 21, 2017

By Michelle Manchir

Consumers and dental professionals have powerful new ADA Seal-accepted electric toothbrushes to use and recommend.

Five models of the Oral-B Oscillating-Rotating-Pulsating Power Toothbrush in August earned the ADA Seal in the powered toothbrushes category, which was updated earlier this year with new requirements and guidelines.

The models accepted include Oral-B Pro CrossAction 1000, 1500; Oral-B Professional Care 2000; Oral-B Pro 3D White 3000; Oral-B Pro SmartSeries 5000, 6000, 7000; and the Oral-B Pro Genius 8000.

The Oral-B Oscillating-Rotating-Pulsating Power Toothbrush lines are the only ADA Seal-accepted powered toothbrushes in the Seal program.

The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs' acceptance of the products is based on the finding that they are safe and have shown efficacy in removing plaque and helping to prevent and reduce gingivitis, when used as directed.

To earn the Seal, the products' manufacturer, Procter & Gamble, had to pass ADA Laboratory tests and meet ADA and American National Standards Institute-approved dental standards.

The company also submitted studies proving clinical safety and efficacy.

In the past year, the Council on Scientific Affairs' Seal Subcommittee spent "significant time and effort reviewing Seal product categories and requirements, focused on rigorous, reproducible and valid data," said Dr. John Dmytryk, the council's Seal subcommittee's chair.

"This means when dentists recommend a powered toothbrush that has earned the ADA Seal to their patients, both parties can be assured that the device will be a safe and effective component of daily oral hygiene," said Dr. Dmytryk, an associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.

"Earning ADA's third party validation further proves the effectiveness of Oral-B power toothbrushes which protect and enhance users' oral health daily," said Marchoe Northern, brand director of oral care at Procter & Gamble.

"We know consumers are faced with many options at the shelf, and the coveted ADA Seal will help them feel even more confident about choosing Oral-B power toothbrushes."
