Dentistry in Long-Term Care Toolkit

The ADA's National Elder Care Advisory Committee invites you to expand your knowledge and comfort level in addressing the oral health needs of older adults, especially those residing within long-term care facilities. Dr. Greg Folse offers practical tips on providing care in these settings, while Dr. Paul Glassman provides information on how to access the tools described on this webpage, including participating in the Dentistry in Long-Term Care: Creating Pathways to Success continuing education course.

Elderly Americans face the greatest barriers to dental care of any age group. Seniors -- especially those living in nursing homes or long-term care facilities -- often have special dental needs and complicated medical conditions. They are particularly at risk and suffer disproportionate rates and severity of dental disease, risking severe medical complications, increasing overall costs of their care, and generally diminishing their quality of life.

That is why the ADA is committed to helping dentists implement long-term care programs to improve the oral health of nursing home residents.

This toolkit, which is highly customizable, was designed as a template for promoting long-term care programs. The materials included were developed with ease of use in mind.
