The ADA Professional Product Review, previously mailed quarterly with The Journal of the American Dental Association, is assuming a new format April 1 when a citable executive summary will run in JADA.
A compilation of unbiased, scientifically sound and clinically relevant product analysis and evaluation, the full Review will continue to be published online. Readers can access issues dating back to 2006 at www.ada.org/ppr.
Though prompted in part by cost considerations, the move will allow for the development of evolving and expanded content and other benefits of digital publishing.
“What it has done is force a sooner and more aggressive look at delivering content in the way that it will be delivered in the future,” said Dr. David Sarrett, editor of The Review. “For us, it’s pushed the envelope in a direction that we needed to go into.”
Another plus of the new online format is that The Review will be referenced in online scientific databases, such as PubMed and Medline, Dr. Sarrett said.
“There will be references in searchable databases,” he said. “Guest authors will have an opportunity to have referencing of their work that they didn’t have before. That’s a very positive benefit.”
Dr. Sarrett pointed out that in a 2011 member survey on Association benefits, The Review ranked fifth highest overall as a valued member benefit.
“From the very origins of the publication as well as now, a core value has been to provide information that we hear from members that they’d like to know about and to therefore be a strong member benefit,” Dr. Sarrett said.
The April issue of The Review will feature a discussion of dental therapeutics topics and a review of elastomeric impression materials, Dr. Sarrett said.
