New dentists: From left to right, Drs. Joshua Austin, Alexa Vitek, Jon Pascarella, Irene Marron-Tarrazzi and Chris Salierno discuss challenges new dentists face after graduation during the "Here's How I did It: Real Talk from New Dentists in Practice" discussion at Annual Session in New Orleans.
—From student debt to managing a practice, at this year's Annual Session, a panel of new dentists offered some insight to the challenges new dentists face after graduation.
“I definitely wish I would have been able to hear a panel discussion like this when I was an associate or just starting my practice,” said Dr. Alexa Vitek, one of four panelists during the “Here's How I did It: Real Talk from New Dentists in Practice” discussion in New Orleans.
“Many times the ideas that continuing education speakers share in their presentations are not feasible for new dentists,” she added. “The ideas shared in the panel discussion are tried and true ideas from other new dentists that can be implemented into your own practices.”
If you were unable to attend the discussion, a half-hour summary review video of the panel, “New Dentists Roundtable—What To Expect Post Graduation” is available on-demand at ADA365, the online extension of the Annual Session.
Dr. Vitek joined Drs. Christ Salierno (moderator), Joshua Austin and Jon Pascarella in the discussion. They answered questions including where the they see themselves in five years, what the biggest mistake they've made so far, how to deal with human resources issues, and what are some keys to making a start-up successful.
“Whether you're buying a practice or starting from scratch, there are many challenging decisions to make that simply didn't exist 10 or 20 years ago,” Dr. Salierno said. “Our generation must educate themselves in business matters in order to lead successful practices.”
