An article entitled "Relationships and referrals," in the most recent quarterly JADA Specialty Scan on Endodontics, includes research findings about the referral relationship between general dentists and endodontists. It reported that 43 percent of dentists refer patients to endodontists.

However, the research was referring to the percentage of patients GPs refer to endodontists, not the percentage of dentists referring.

Within overall results of the study, authors said, "GPs reported that on average they referred 43 percent of patients who needed root canal treatment to endodontists during a typical year of practice." The study also found that 99 percent of dentists refer at least one patient a year to an endodontist.
