Understanding the privacy and security regulations under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is of great importance to every covered health care provider.
Covered medical professionals, including dentists and dental team members, need to understand what it means to comply with HIPAA and how to best protect patient information in compliance with HIPAA.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has a new resource titled “Medical Privacy of Protected Health Information” that provides links to certain federal government resources on HIPAA compliance.
The document is available online (PDF).
The CMS resource briefly discusses consent; incidental disclosures; email, phone and fax communications with patients and practitioners; communications with family and friends; and reporting suspected child abuse.
For more information on the HIPAA privacy rule, visit www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/.
The ADA Complete HIPAA Compliance Kit (J598) is available from the ADA Catalog and includes a manual, the training CD-ROM and a three-year update service. The kit is $300 for members and $450 for nonmembers.
