Planning NCDHM activities?

CMS offers free materials and resources

January 20, 2014

Baltimore—Dentists planning National Children's Dental Health Month activities can order free oral health education materials from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to share with pregnant women and parents and caregivers of young children as well as materials and tips to share with community partners.

"We hope that the members will use these materials to help promote the need and safety of dental care during pregnancy and encourage parents of young children to access appropriate dental care," said Dr. Lynn Mouden, CMS chief dental officer. "National Children's Dental Health Month is a good time to reinforce important oral health messages that will help families start on the right path toward good oral health."

The free materials are available at InsureKidsNow.gov, the CMS Web page that helps link families with children covered by Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program with information on providers and dental health benefits available. The materials were developed as part of a national campaign launched to raise awareness about health coverage available under these programs; create opportunities for families to get their eligible children and teens signed up for coverage; motivate parents to enroll their children and teens and renew their coverage; and provide outreach guides and toolkits that can be used to help states, community organizations, schools, health care providers and others organize and conduct successful outreach activities.

Materials and resources in both English and Spanish include:

  • a flyer with oral health messages for parents/caregivers of children under age 3;
  • a poster with oral health messages for parents/caregivers of children under age 3;
  • a tear pad with oral health messages for pregnant women;
  • Web buttons and banners with link to the Insure Kids Now Dental Health page;
  • template newsletter articles for health care providers and organizations that interact with pregnant women and parents/caregivers of children under age 3;
  • social media posts;

The website also offers tips for using the materials, a webinar on oral health education and the scientific bibliography for the materials.
