More than 75 countries celebrate World Oral Health Day
March 21, 2014
Dental professionals and others in more than 75 countries worldwide held programs and ceremonies March 20 "Celebrating Healthy Smiles" for World Oral Health Day.
This year's goodwill ambassador is Yaya Touré, star of the Côte d'Ivoire National Football Team and African Footballer of the year in 2011, 2012 and 2013. You can view his World Oral Health Day video and outttakes video on YouTube.com.
To mark the 2014 observance, the FDI World Dental Federation has released "The Tooth Thief," an illustrated children's book that aims to instill good oral habits for children at a young age. Readers can follow the exploits of Mascarpone, a mouse detective, as he travels around the world trying to solve the mystery of the missing teeth. In his quest he meets different characters such as the Tooth Fairy, la Petite Souris from France and the tooth spirits in Africa, who will teach him about many traditions in different regions of the globe. The book also includes 10 steps to improve healthy smiles to ensure children learn about the importance of a healthy oral routine that will help them in preventing oral health problems in the future. The FDI World Dental Federation organizes the annual observance in collaboration with the ADA, a member association. World Oral Health Day sponsors are Listerine Mouthwash, Unilever Oral Care, Henry Schein Inc. and Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program.
The annual observance offers FDI member dental associations, schools, companies and other groups the opportunity to celebrate the day with events organized under a single, unifying and simple message.
