Register beginning June 1 to review information on relationships between health care providers and manufacturers
May 19, 2014
Beginning June 1, dentists can register on a federal government website that will allow the public to see information about relationships between health care providers and various manufacturers or group purchasing organizations.
Registration is voluntary and gives dentists the opportunity to review information about the dentist before it's posted on the public website and to dispute inaccurate information.
The Open Payments program was established by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services under the Physician Payment Sunshine Act, part of the Affordable Care Act. The Sunshine Act requires certain manufacturers to report CMS payments and other transfers of value to health care providers and teaching hospitals and requires CMS to post the information on a public website.
Ownership interests held by health care providers and their family members in certain manufacturers and group purchasing organizations will also be reported. The purpose of the act is to create greater transparency around the financial relationships of manufacturers, group purchasing organizations, physicians and teaching hospitals.
Dentists can register in the Enterprise Portal of the CMS Open Payments website beginning June 1. The public website is scheduled to go live before Sept. 30. To learn more or to register, visit cms.gov/Regulations-and-Guidance/Legislation/National-Physician-Payment-Transparency-Program/index.html.
