2015 marks 70 years since Grand Rapids, Mich. became the first city in the world to fluoridate its drinking water to levels optimal for preventing tooth decay.

To mark this public health anniversary, five groups have collaborated to plan the 70th Anniversary Fluoridation Celebration and Symposium.

The event, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4:30 Sept. 11 and 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept.12 at the ADA Headquarters in Chicago, will offer 11 hours of continuing education for attendees.

Anyone interested in improving the oral health of their communities, including community leaders, dental and medical professionals, public health officials, water system personnel and researchers, is encouraged to attend.

The symposium will facilitate the update and transfer of current science surrounding fluoridation; allow for sharing of legislative and legal strategies as they relate to water fluoridation; establish a national fluoridation dialogue; and refocus efforts on securing water fluoridation for U.S. communities.

Sessions during the meeting will cover topics including science/engineering, legislation, funding/cost benefit, campaign strategies, social media and communications.

"I am proud of ADA's history in supporting community water fluoridation," said ADA President Maxine Feinberg. "In 1999, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention named fluoridation of drinking water one of ten great public health achievements of the 20th century. For 70 years, organized dentistry has been supporting efforts to improve our nation's oral health through community water fluoridation."

The American Academy of Pediatrics; American Association of Public Health Dentistry; American Dental Association; Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors; and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Oral Health planned the event.

Registration is $150 and closes Sept. 1. For more information and to register, visit www.ADA.org/Fluoridation70.
