Three ADA Foundation dental student scholarship and award programs share a Nov. 13 application deadline.

The Foundation's Predoctoral Dental Student Scholarship Program — including the Underrepresented Minority Dental Student Scholarships, the Dr. Robert B. Dewhirst Scholarships and the Robert J. Sullivan Scholarships — helps predoctoral dental students defray some academic expenses. The ADAF awards about 54 scholarships of $2,500 each, totaling about $135,000 annually.

The ADAF E. "Bud" Tarrson Dental School Student Community Leadership Award and Dr. Thomas J. Zwemer Award recognize exemplary volunteer community service projects that are organized and/or conducted by a group of dental students enrolled in an accredited predoctoral dental education program. The ADAF Tarrson Award recognizes programs that are conducted within the U.S., while the Zwemer Award recognizes programs that are conducted outside of the U.S. The Foundation accepts one application per school, per program.

The Foundation named seven Tarrson Award recipients in 2014. They were the University of Washington School of Dentistry; Loma Linda University School of Dentistry; Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine; University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine; University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry; University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry; and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. The ADAF was able to provide seven Tarrson Awards in 2014 due to a donation from ADA Business Resources and an anonymous donor.

The Foundation awarded the 2014 Zwemer Award to the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry for its service learning project in Valle de Angeles, Honduras.

Applications for these dental student programs, along with complete guidelines and eligibility rules, are available at ADAFoundation.org.
