Midmorning line: Patients wrap around two sides of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio during the ADA 2014 MOM event. A total of 1,207 patients received more than $526,000 worth of dental care at the all-day charitable dental clinic Oct. 12.
— For the third year in a row, the ADA will host a Mission of Mercy event at the annual meeting.
This year's MOM event will be held Nov. 8 in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, as part of ADA 2015 – America's Dental Meeting.
This free one-day dental clinic, in cooperation with the District of Columbia Dental Society, will serve up to 1,000 patients in need of dental care, from cleanings and exams to surgical and restorative treatments. This is the first MOM event held in Washington, D.C.
"Having the MOM in Washington, D.C. draws national attention to the issue of oral health and its correlation to overall health," said Dr. Johanna Huijssoon, DCDS member and local chair of the MOM event.
At ADA 2014's MOM event in San Antonio, dental professionals treated 1,207 patients and $526,474 in total care was provided. The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center was transformed into a 100-chair dental clinic that treated adults and children who had limited financial resources or were otherwise unable to visit a dental office. The MOM event included more than 1,000 volunteer dentists, hygienists, assistants, students and community workers from across the state of Texas and the nation.
"Last year I observed the MOM in San Antonio and saw the impact it had on all those involved, patients, providers and volunteers alike," said Dr. Huijssoon. "This event is about caring and giving back to the community. It is also a great way to provide education on the importance of oral health and prevention."
For the third year in a row, Colgate is the lead sponsor for 2015's MOM. Great-West Financial and KaVo Kerr Group have once again become major sponsors for the event, and new to this list is Delta Dental Plans Association.
Transformation: Part of the inside of the Henry B. Gonzalez Covention Center in San Antonio was turned into a massive clinic for the ADA 2014 MOM event.
"One of Colgate's core values is caring, which includes caring for communities and the people who live in them," said Dr. Barbara Shearer, director of scientific affairs for Colgate. "We do this through our own Bright Smiles Bright Futures program, as well as the ADA Foundation's Give Kids A Smile program but also look for opportunities to help dental professionals give back. The Mission of Mercy events are a wonderful way to showcase the ADA, dentists and their teams, while helping a large number of people who could not otherwise access dental care."
"As a long-time business partner of the ADA, Great-West Financial is proud to be a sponsor of the ADA 2015 Mission of Mercy event," said Jim Biesterfelt, vice president, group special accounts. "The level of collaboration, volunteerism and compassion surrounding this event is impressive and exemplifies many of the same core values embraced by our own You Make a Difference program here at our company. We are happy to play our part in helping the ADA's Mission of Mercy program be successful."
"Delta Dental believes that everyone deserves to have access to oral health care," said Steve Olson, president and CEO of Delta Dental Plans Association. "We're proud to team up with the ADA for Missions of Mercy to help provide crucial oral health services to underserved populations who otherwise wouldn't have access to them."
At press time, other ADA MOM sponsors include financial and in-kind support from Arm & Hammer, CareCredit, Freeman, Henry Schein Dental, Patterson Dental, Affordable Dentures, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Henry Schein Cares Foundation, Larrell One Step Dentures, SmartScrubs Inc., Benco Dental, Sanofi, International College of Dentists – USA section, Lands' End, Caremark, Sunstar Americas and the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Wells Fargo Practice Finance.
"I am very excited to see how everyone has come together in support of this amazing program," said Dr. Huijssoon. "I believe we have a team in place that will make the first MOM in our nation's capital a truly memorable event."
