Washington — A continuing education course at ADA 2015 – America's Dental Meeting will show dentists the power of adding a step to their patients' routine of brushing and flossing: rinsing.

Drs. Joel H. Berg and Sebastian Ciancio will teach on Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon The Prevention of Oral Disease: Meta-Analysis of an Essential Oil Mouthrinse (course 5380). Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc., maker of Listerine, is sponsoring the course.

Speakers will cover the results of a meta-analysis which  analyzed data from multiple studies, 29 published and 12 unpublished. These results are significant since the analysis includes data from over 5,000 patients, said Dr. Ciancio, Distinguished Service Professor and chair, Department of Periodontics and Endodontics, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York.

The analysis will present evidence from the studies that conclude that using a rinse in addition to flossing and brushing is a "better way" to control plaque and gingivitis, particularly reaching biofilms not only on teeth but also on oral mucosal surfaces throughout the mouth and oro-pharynx, Dr. Ciancio said.

The results will contain the most up-to-date science available on the issue, said Dr. Berg, dean of the University of Washington School of Dentistry and past president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

"More and more dentists are realizing that brushing and flossing alone don't do the job," Dr. Ciancio said. "You need something more."

"Rinsing is important," said Dr. Berg. "It makes a bigger difference than brushing and flossing alone."

Effective mouthrinses consist of essential oils — concentrated liquids containing volatile aroma compounds from plants, Dr. Ciancio said. He recommended the use of products that bear the ADA Seal of Acceptance. For a list of products that have the ADA Seal of Acceptance, go to ADA.org. and enter "seal" in the search engine.

ADA 2015 – America's Dental Meeting will run Nov. 5-10 in Washington, D.C.
