August 18, 2016
Learning finances: University of Illinois at Chicago dental students listen at a "Managing Debt and Wealth" session, held Aug. 12 at ADA Headquarters. Seventy-two students attended one of the first ADA Success program sessions of the 2016-17 school year.
In an effort to help dental students prepare for life as a dentist and boost student engagement with the ADA, the New Dentist Committee and Office of Student Affairs is launching an enhanced series of ADA Success programs for the 2016-17 academic year.
The program continues to build on the reformatted and re-branded program, which launched in 2015, to make it more broadly applicable to the current generation of dental students. Over 150 ADA Success programs were held in over 40 dental schools during the 2015-16 academic year.
"ADA Success is such an important program because it highlights topics most relevant to students," said Dr. Emily Ishkanian. "It's the ADA's way of illustrating that we are aware of the issues dental students are facing in life and in dentistry."
ADA Success consists of a series of live, in-person programs presented by ADA member dentists or other subject matter experts on topics most relevant to today's dental students. The following topics are:
- Managing Debt and Wealth: Students can learn how to take control of their finances with budgeting and loan repayment information.
- Future of Dentistry: Students can get acquainted with the forces shaping dental care market and practice environment.
- Practice Management for All Dentists: Students can learn how to manage their business, staff and patients' expectations for practice success.
- All about Associateships: Students can review types of associateships and receive tips on contracts and compensation.
- Understanding Employment Agreements: Students can explore and understand the complexities of employment contracts.
- Finding a Job: Students can learn more about their career options and how to prepare for their first job search.
This year, the program added Leadership and Ethics in Dentistry, where students can explore leadership skills and how to navigate ethical dilemmas in dental school and dental practice.
"These programs are designed, evaluated and updated regularly to be relevant," Dr. Ishkanian said. "Ethical issues arise at every stage of your career. We want students to begin to think through these ethical dilemmas and equip them with the tools to abide by our ADA Code of Ethics."
In addition, 11 new speakers joined the ADA Success speaker corps. These ADA member dentists, representing nine state and 10 local dental societies, bring a wide array of experience to the diverse speaker corps. In all, there are 52 dentists speakers from across the country. A speaker training program was held July 15 at ADA Headquarters to help familiarize this year's new speakers familiarize with the ADA Success program and help them prepare for their role as ADA ambassadors.
