ADA develops guide for reporting new scaling code
May 16, 2016
The ADA, with support from other dental organizations and third-party payers, has developed guidance on implementing a new scaling code that fills a gap in the continuum of care for patients with gingival disease and no attachment loss.
Code D4346, "scaling in the generalized presence of moderate or severe gingival inflammation — full mouth, after oral evaluation," was among 11 new codes and four revisions for CDT 2017 approved by the Code Maintenance Committee. Since the procedure described by the code is new territory for dentists and dental benefit plans, the ADA Council on Dental Benefit Programs and leaders in other sectors of the dental community believed some guidance was necessary.
The guidance document, posted at ADA.org/publications/CDT
, explains when to use the code, how to use it and in what instances. There's a flow chart dentists can follow and a FAQ section.
