ADA Laboratory in the spotlight

August 08, 2017

Lab guests: Spiro Megremis, Ph.D., director of research and standards for the ADA Science Institute, right, leads a tour July 28 of the ADA Laboratory for about a dozen students from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry and other members of the Chicago Section of the American Association for Dental Research. The tour included a look at the ADA Laboratory’s mechanical and dental material test rooms, along with some of the equipment developed and patented by the ADA and some of the laboratory’s equipment, including chemistry equipment, a digital image correlation system, CAD/CAM machine, scanning electron microscope, 3D printer and 3D milling machine. It is a goal of the ADA Science Institute’s research and standards department to answer questions from member dentists about dental materials and products through general and applied research and to translate the results of this research in a useable format. The science staff also works with ADA standards staff to lead the development and implementation of eventual American National Standards Institute-approved dental standards. The ADA Laboratory also regularly collaborates with the ADA Foundation Volpe Research Center and the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry. ADA members are invited to tour the ADA Laboratory.
