Waterpik Water Flosser first in its class to earn ADA Seal

February 20, 2017

By Michelle Manchir

Consumers for the first time can use a powered interdental cleaner that carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

The ADA Council On Scientific Affairs awarded the ADA Seal of Acceptance to five Waterpik Water Flosser product lines based on its finding that they are safe and have shown efficacy for removing plaque along the gumline and between teeth and for helping to prevent and reduce gingivitis.

“This product was shown to reduce plaque and gingivitis in areas between the teeth, often the most difficult areas for patients to effectively clean,” said Dr. John Dmytryk, chair of the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs’ Seal Subcommittee. “By granting the ADA Seal of Acceptance to the Waterpik Water Flosser, consumers for whom these devices are appropriate can be confident that they can be a safe and effective component of their daily oral care when used as directed.”

To earn the Seal, Water Pik, Inc. demonstrated, through providing scientific data, clinical studies and results of laboratory tests, that it meets ADA requirements for product safety and efficacy in the ADA Seal Program’s Powered Interdental Cleaners category.

Water Pik, Inc. describes the product as “an effective alternate to manual or string floss.” Users can adjust the flossers’ pressure control to their liking as the products’ motor and pump streams pulsating water from its reservoir into one’s mouth to clean the gums and between teeth.

“Having the ADA Seal of Acceptance is important to Water Pik,” the company said in a statement to ADA News. “It shows our commitment to a high standard of research that can pass the scrutiny of the ADA.”

The Water Flosser product lines that earned the Seal are the Waterpik Aquarius Professional, the Waterpik Aquarius Professional Designer Series, the Waterpik Ultra, the Waterpik Nano and the Waterpik Traveler.

The product represents the only powered interdental cleaner currently in the ADA Seal Program.
