Newly revised book leads dentists to create dream practice

Image of Building or Refreshing Your Dental Practice — A Guide to Dental Office Design bookWhen constructing or renovating brick-and-mortar practices, it can be easy to listen to consultants and design groups on what steps to take.

But how many of those outsiders have actually been involved in dental office design itself?

With the newly revised edition of “Building or Refreshing Your Dental Practice: A Guide to Dental Office Design,” the ADA has combined the knowledge of several different experts — many of whom are practicing dentists who understand the needs and challenges of designing specifically for a dental office.

“Far too many dentists bemoan the fact that dental schools offer little training in dental office development,” said Dr. Gordon F. Osterhaus, a retired Arizona-based dentist who contributed to the book with chapter titled “Building a Team You Can Trust.” “A smarter alternative would be for dentists to study all the available literature covering this topic prior to undertaking such a challenging and expensive endeavor. [This book] is a great place to start.”

Full of color pictures of actual dental offices, this book addresses every element of the design process, walking the reader from the beginning (financing, creating a project team, choosing a site, leasing or buying property and legal compliance issues) to the end (creating ambience, selecting finishes and color schemes and buying furniture).

Remodeling a practice can ultimately result in more than just curb appeal, the authors say.

“’Building or Refreshing Your Dental Practice’ provides information necessary to create an office that communicates the quality of your services, where you and your team can be more productive while experiencing less stress and where you actually look forward to every morning,” said Dr. Michael Unthank, a Nebraska-based dentist and architect who writes about office planning and design in the book.

Building or Refreshing Your Dental Practice — A Guide to Dental Office Design” costs $59.95 for members, $89.95 retail.
