Review the facts during Oral Cancer Awareness Month

March 28, 2017 April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and an apt time for dental professionals to review information about oral cavity and oropharynx cancers, which account for about 2.9 percent of all cancers diagnosed in the U.S. and 1.6 percent of cancer deaths.

Dentists can review statistics, find a protocol for oral cancer examinations and connect with other resources from the American Dental Association online.

Dentists can refer their patients to the ADA's consumer website, MouthHealthy.org, for information about oral cancer.

The Association recognizes that early oral cancer diagnoses have the potential to have a significant impact on treatment decisions and outcomes, and it supports routine visual and tactile examinations, particularly for patients who are at risk, including those who use tobacco or who are heavy consumers of alcohol, according to House of Delegates Resolution 85H-2014.
