November is National Family Caregivers Month.

When a person has someone who needs constant care, the caregiver may be focusing on needs that seem more urgent — such as pain medication and comfort — and neglect the needy person's oral health. It's important to remind caregivers to make oral health a priority, especially in light of its connection to overall health.

Proper oral care can even help lower the risk of developing pneumonia while patients are in the hospital. A video from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs shows caregivers how they can help their loved ones reduce their risk of developing pneumonia while hospitalized by maintaining their oral health around the clock.

Dentists are encouraged to share the video with their patients and can download posters from the VA promoting tooth brushing to prevent pneumonia:

MouthHealthy also has new resources to help family members develop oral health care routines for various caregiving scenarios.
