Letters: What about new grads?

January 16, 2012

It continues to amaze me that the stakeholders and proponents of the midlevel provider miss the fact there are many recent graduates that are either unemployed or underemployed. These dentists are barely able to pay off their student loans, yet the former believe flooding a saturated dental market with another provider will solve the access to care issue.

Most of my recent graduate colleagues and I would jump at the opportunity to provide care for the less fortunate in exchange for loan redemption or even job stability. I don’t know how much midlevel providers will be willing to work for, but I can bet that it is not much less my struggling colleagues.

Work with legislators and nonprofits to recruit recent graduates with a reasonable salary, and you will find you already have those capable of addressing the access to care issue.
