January 21, 2013
As we welcome 2013, the American Dental Association Library as I know it has forever changed. For now, the Library will remain open, however with a reduced staff, budget and access.
Several of these changes are significant. The Library will not be open to walk-in visitors, ADA members included. Purchases of new books and all book lending have been eliminated and current periodical subscriptions are being reviewed as well. With this fiscal belt-tightening, Library staff remaining must undertake additional duties that were distributed to other staff members.
On a personal note, I would like to recognize the work of an exemplary staff member. A "heavy" user of the Library as an ADA member for over 25 years, I have had the pleasure of the assistance of Ruth Schultz, who I learned had been with the ADA for 36 years. With Ruth's help, I have been able to research numerous topics both for patient care and to expand my own self-study. Her kindness and unlimited patience with my numerous inquiries were unsurpassed. With her own depth of knowledge, she was always able to add value to my search. I credit Ms. Schultz and the Library for allowing me to expand my own horizons and begin a speaking and lecture career.
I hope a "new" Library can provide to all ADA members the inspiration and knowledge the "old" Library provided me.
