Mission, Vision & Staff

Mission

To provide, on an ongoing basis, policy knowledge related to critical issues in the dental care system in order to inform strategic decision making within and outside the ADA. Through innovative knowledge generation, synthesis, and dissemination, the Health Policy Institute aims to be a thought leader and the premier source for credible data and research on critical issues facing the dental care system.

Who we are

HPI’s interdisciplinary team of health economists, statisticians, health services researchers and data analysts has extensive expertise in policy research and has published extensively in top-caliber peer-reviewed journals. HPI staff regularly collaborate with external researchers in academia as well as think tanks and consulting firms.

Marko Vujicic, Chief Economist and Vice President

  Dr. Marko Vujicic is responsible for overseeing all of the Association’s policy research activities. Prior to joining the American Dental Association in 2011, he was Senior Economist with The World Bank in Washington D.C. where he directed the global health workforce policy program. He was also a Health Economist with the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. He is a visiting assistant professor at Tufts University in Boston. Dr. Vujicic obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor’s degree in Business from McGill University in Montreal.

Andrew Blatz, Research Analyst

Andrew Blatz HPI Staff Bio   Andrew is responsible for cleaning, maintaining, and analyzing data collected in select surveys conducted by HPI.  Prior to joining the ADA in 2015, he worked as a Research Analyst at ECRA Group, Inc.  Andrew received his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Northern Illinois University and is currently working on his Master’s degree in Applied Statistics at DePaul University.

Barry Grau, Research Analyst II

Barry Grau HPI Staff Bio Photo   Barry is responsible for “big data” analysis on issues related to dental healthcare economics; developing and maintaining the HPI Dental Office Database mapping dentists and dental offices in the United States; and maintaining HPI’s data infrastructure. Before joining the American Dental Association in 2000 as a Research Associate in the Department of Testing Services, Barry was Principal Research Programmer at the University of Illinois Medical Center. Barry received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and did graduate level course work in applied statistics and psychometrics at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Brittany Harrison, Senior Project Assistant

Brittany Harrison HPI Staff Bio   Brittany provides assistance to lead researchers in various projects, including copy editing of HPI publications, primary and secondary research, and responding to customer requests. Prior to joining the ADA in 2015, Brittany worked as a graduate assistant for DePaul University History Department. Brittany obtained her Master’s degree in History from DePaul University and Bachelor’s degree in History and American Studies from Lake Forest College.

Adriana Menezes, Senior Manager, Operations

Adriana Menezes HPI Staff Bio Photo   Adriana provides managerial and operational leadership on diverse projects and tasks. She is accountable for a large scope of divisional work, including budget development and monitoring, business development and marketing functions, overseeing HPI’s analytic services function, contractual negotiations, arrangements for external vendor and consultant relationships, survey data collection for key aspects of HPI’s data infrastructure, and dissemination and branding of HPI research.  Prior to joining the ADA in 2002 as a Research Analyst, she was a Marketing Research Analyst at CNA Insurance.  She received a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and International Business from DePaul University in Chicago.

Matthew Mikkelsen, Manager, Education Surveys

Matthew Mikkelsen HPI Staff Bio Photo   Matthew’s major responsibilities include the programming and oversight of the annual surveys of more than 1,400 accredited predoctoral, advanced, and allied dental education programs on behalf of the Commission on Dental Accreditation, the publication of the ADA’s annual series of reports on dental education, and the administration of the ADA’s online survey system, FluidSurveys. He joined the ADA in 1999 as a Research Analyst.  Matthew received his Master’s degree in Applied Sociology from Loyola University Chicago and his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology with a specialization in Health and Humanities from Michigan State University.

Rachel Morrissey, Research Analyst/Education

Rachel Morrissey HPI Staff Bio Photo   Rachel is responsible for the analysis and evaluation of data from the annual dental school and allied dental program accreditation surveys. Prior to re-joining the American Dental Association in 2014 (she was previously on staff from 1997 to 2001), she worked as a research consultant for many associations and nonprofits. She was also a survey specialist at the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. Rachel received a Master’s degree in Public Affairs from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Bradley Munson, Senior Research Analyst

Bradley Munson HPI Staff Bio Photo   Bradley is responsible for the analysis of complex statistical information gathered in multiple concurrent research projects using both primary and secondary data, providing significant contributions to a variety of research initiatives within the Institute.  Prior to joining the American Dental Association in 2000, he worked as a Data Analyst at Information Resources, Inc. Bradley obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Math from Northwestern University.

Kamyar Nasseh, Health Economist

Kamyar Nasseh HPI Staff Bio Photo   Kamyar leads in the research and writing of peer-reviewed manuscripts for policy, medical, and health economics journals. Kamyar manages staff in the production of ADA health policy briefs and also oversees efforts that will enhance the data infrastructure of the ADA. Prior to joining the ADA in 2012, he was a Health Economist at Express Scripts, a pharmacy benefits manager.  He was also an Economist at Travelers Insurance, where he conducted research on workers’ compensation healthcare resource utilization and measured the impact of various policy changes on individual claim outcomes.  He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Michigan State University, where his area of specialization was in cross-section and panel data econometrics. 

Rebecca Starkel, Senior Research Analyst

Rebecca Starkel HPI Staff Bio Photo   Rebecca provides significant contributions to a variety of research initiatives within the Institute, and is responsible for numerous data collection activities, research analyses, and report and journal article writing.  She joined the ADA in 2008.  Rebecca obtained her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees, both in Applied Social Psychology, from Loyola University Chicago.

Thomas Wall, Manager, Statistical Research

Thomas Wall HPI Staff Bio Photo   Tom is responsible for providing technical support for the Institute’s activities.  Prior to joining the ADA in 1998, Tom was a Survey Director at Abt Associates.  Tom obtained his MBA from Loyola University Chicago and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Southern Illinois University.

Cassie Yarbrough, Lead Public Policy Analyst

Cassie Yarbrough HPI Staff Bio Photo   Cassie is responsible for researching and analyzing policy changes that impact dentistry, oral health, and the healthcare landscape as a whole. Prior to joining the American Dental Association in 2013, she was a Program Analyst with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Inspector General, Office of Evaluation and Inspections. She was also a Health Policy Intern with the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Cassie obtained her Master of Public Policy from the University of Chicago, Harris School of Public Policy and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Sylvia Zeno, Manager of Administrative Services

Sylvia Zeno HPI Staff Bio Photo   Sylvia is responsible for managing the day-to-day administrative activities of the Institute.  Prior to joining the ADA in 2007 as a Senior Project Assistance, she worked as a Research Librarian Assistant at the Illinois CPA Society.  Sylvia obtained her Master’s degree in Journalism from the Columbia College Chicago and has a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
