When design is on your mind

Dr. Leslie Anthony is "about to build a new office." Dr. Gregory Davenport thinks it's time to remodel. Dr. Tom Ciandella came to see the office designs for other practices.

"It's awesome," Dr. Anthony said of the 2008 Dental Office Design Competition, a 35-panel random sampling of entries (www.matsco.com/dentists/dental-office-design) in the Matsco-sponsored competition continuing through Sunday at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. A 36th panel invites entries for the 2009 competition.

Dr. Anthony and Klint Croucher, a Burkhart equipment specialist, came to annual session for ideas on designing and equipping her new office in Kalispell, Mont., and this exhibit was stop No. 1 on their itinerary.

"That's worth the meeting right there," she said of a particular floor plan. Lighting, fixtures, surfaces, molding, spacing, noise reduction, you name it, all came in for scrutiny as they examined the panel photos and design catalogs.

"We've got the plans of the building started and we're here to get ideas to tweak the floor plan and to look at the equipment downstairs," Dr. Anthony said. This year, her practice goes digital, she said, and the idea is to transition to paperless practice after building the new office.

Dr. Davenport built an office in Cortland, Ohio, in 1988, "and I think it's time to remodel," he said while visiting the exhibit on the second level of the convention center, Tower View foyer. Dr. Ciandella, Swedesboro, N.J., saw design similarity in the geographically dispersed photos, which include "outstanding" new, specialty and group practice facilities and offices noted for design efficiency. "You could be here and be in any city," he said.

The no fee exhibit, sponsored by Matsco, Dental Economics and ADA Member Advantage, is open Friday and Saturday 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 7:30 a.m.-noon with continuing education credit available.
