UCSF dental school names Dr. Featherstone dean

San Francisco—In a Sept. 5 announcement to the campus community, University of California at San Francisco Chancellor J. Michael Bishop, M.D., named John Featherstone, Ph.D., dean of the UCSF School of Dentistry pending approval by the UC Board of Regents.

Dr. Featherstone has served as interim dean since Dr. Charles Bertolami began his tenure as dean of the New York University College of Dentistry in September 2007.

Calling him "a distinguished scholar and a skilled administrator," Dr. Bishop applauded Dr. Featherstone's 13 years of experience on the UCSF faculty.

"As interim dean, he has demonstrated excellent leadership and management skills, with accomplishments that include selecting and appointing a department chair, establishing the new position of associate dean for clinical affairs as well as restructuring the school administration accordingly, and improving the clinical infrastructure and the financial situation of the predoctoral dental clinics," said Dr. Bishop.

The recipient of the 2007 ADA Norton Ross Award for excellence in clinical research, Dr. Featherstone is a pioneering researcher on dental caries and caries-inhibitory mechanisms. He is the Leland and Gladys Barber Distinguished Professor of Dentistry at the UCSF School of Dentistry, former chair of the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences (1996-2005), and has served as principal investigator on major research grants funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

Dr. Featherstone's career has included posts in the pharmaceutical and health fields. He holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand) and a master's of science from the University of Manchester in England.
