ADA, Australian Dental Association team up on CE

For the first time, the ADA has collaborated with an international dental association to create an online continuing education program for members of both organizations.

The result, Interviews with the Experts on Key Topics in Dentistry Today, is now offered on ADA CE Online (www.adaceonline.org) for free as an introductory offer.

During the 2009 annual session in Honolulu, the Australian Dental Association taped interviews with distinguished experts in dentistry for its Dental Files program, a series of downloadable MP3 interviews with experts discussing a range of clinical topics and practice management.

The course includes six interviews on:

  • dental implications for patients with cancer by Dr. Susan Calderbank (associate professor, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine);
  • chairside health testing by Dr. Michael Glick (dean, State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine; editor, Journal of the American Dental Association);
  • bleaching by Dr. Van Haywood (professor, Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry; director, MCG Dental Continuing Education);
  • parenting and dental health by Dr. Kaneta Lott (board-certified pediatric dentist);
  • sedation during dental treatment by Dr. Stanley Malamed (professor, Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC);
  • evidence-based practice by Dr. Daniel Meyer (ADA senior vice president of Science/Professional Affairs).

By the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to identify side effects of radiation treatment for cancer on the oral tissues; explain how a dentist can screen for cardiovascular disease; discuss the options available for bleaching; suggest ways parents that parents can reduce demineralization in children's teeth; and recognize potential problems resulting from a lack of pain control.

"As a member of the Committee on International Programs and Development of the ADA, I am pleased to see collaboration with the Australian Dental Association in the field of continuing education," said Dr. John Clarkson. CIPD and the Division of Global Affairs worked with the ADA Center for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning to develop the course.

"This current course consists of open and broad-ranging interviews with six distinguished experts in their fields," said Dr. Clarkson. "The subjects were chosen as they are seen as important issues for clinicians and the public."
