Session courses focus on leadership skills

Orlando, Fla.—Many dentists have an interest in honing their leadership skills in order to become more involved in their dental societies and other community organizations.

ADA annual sessions are a prime venue for professionals to build leadership networks and learn more about leadership opportunities in organized dentistry.

As a result, the ADA is now adding a full day of education and networking at annual session to provide dentists and their spouses with the tools needed to become effective leaders in organized dentistry and their communities.

Leadership Day at Annual Session—A Networking/Educational Forum for Leaders and Aspiring Leaders takes place Saturday, Oct. 9. Attendees are welcome to register for one or both courses and attend the Leadership Day open house between courses to network with leaders in organized dentistry.

The day launches with Leadership and Decision-Making Strategies (10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; course 5305) by speaker Ashleigh Shelby Rosette, Ph.D., of the Duke University Fuqua School of Business and a faculty member for the ADA Institute for Diversity in Leadership. This course helps attendees think about the decision-making process strategically and analytically and lead more effectively.

Dr. Rosette has provided consulting services to an array of clients in industries such as banking, auditing services, automobile manufacturing, medical services and the social/nonprofit sector. She received the Excellence in Teaching Award of the Year in the Cross-Continent Executive MBA program and the Duke Goethe Executive MBA program at Fuqua, and the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

Following Dr. Rosette’s program, there will be a mid-day open house (1-2:30 p.m.) that provides another opportunity for aspiring leaders to network with dentists and their spouses who serve or have served in leadership roles in organized dentistry. Participants will include representatives from the Alliance of the ADA, the American Association of Women Dentists, the Hispanic Dental Association, the National Dental Association, the Society of American Indian Dentists, and select ADA councils, programs, and and ADA and related state and local dental societies.

Leadership Day at Annual Session concludes with Leadership: Powerful, Practical and Professional (3-5:30 p.m.; course 5321) facilitated by speaker J. Patrick Murphy, Ph.D., director of the DePaul University School of Public Service. A must for dental professionals who aspire to leadership roles on the boards of nonprofit organizations, the program focuses on the need to work with boards for effective governance and leadership, and emphasizes ethical and effective conduct by board and staff members.

Dr. Murphy founded the William and Mary Pat Hay Vincent de Paul Leadership Project and has lectured in Brazil, India, Ireland, France, the Philippines, Taiwan and Kenya. He currently teaches management and leadership courses at DePaul and has served as the university’s treasurer and secretary.
