Cooperative school nurse project goes live online
Silver Spring, Md.—School nurses now have easy access to comprehensive oral health information through the National Association of School Nurses’ new website, Oral Health Connections.
The ADA and the NASN teamed up in January for the project supported by the DentaQuest Foundation. A dozen health organizations also provided links, content and expertise for the website (www.oralhealthconnections.org).
The Oral Health Connections website features oral health curricula and classroom teaching tools; oral health continuing education information for nursing professionals; links to help schoolchildren find access to dental care; information to help children with special needs; and tools and resources.
“The NASN has had very positive feedback from school nurses on its new resource, the Oral Health Connections website,” said Martha Bergren, D.N.S., R.N., the association’s director of research. “The website provides resources to school nurses on lesson plans, continuing education and websites that link them with oral health providers and dental care for their students.”
The website also offers opportunities for school nurses and other school personnel who address oral health issues to connect through an oral health forum and a Facebook group.
“Also through the oral health forum, users can share additional resources and school nurses and oral health experts can weigh in on dilemmas,” Dr. Bergren added. “The Oral Health Forum is multidisciplinary and all oral health professionals are encouraged to sign up.
“NASN is grateful to DentaQuest for funding this great resource and to the American Dental Association for partnering with school nurses to improve children’s oral health,” said Dr. Bergren. Log on to www.oralhealthconnections.org to view the website.
