Dr. Floyd Everett Dewhirst and Dr. Curtis Eugene Gause, a past ADA trustee and a past vice president, respectively, died in the latter part of 2012.

Dr. Dewhirst

Dr. Dewhirst, 98, died at his home in Los Angeles Sept. 13, 2012. He was an ADA 13th District trustee from 1972-78. Born in Harvard, Ill., Dr. Dewhirst grew up in California. He had a private practice in West Los Angeles for 60 years and was long active in organized dentistry.

His was a dental family. All three of his daughters worked with him during his years in practice: Dr. Louise Dewhirst was his dental partner for 15 years; Patricia Dewhirst Crane was his hygienist for 28 years; and Dana Dewhirst Running helped administer his office. Son, Dr. Floyd E. Dewhirst III, is a dentist and a scientist at the Forsyth Institute in Cambridge, Mass.

Dr. Dewhirst is survived by his children.

Dr. Gause

Dr. Gause, 87, died on Dec. 22, 2012 in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was an ADA former vice president, serving from 1993-94. Dr. Gause was born and raised in Tarpon Springs, Fla.  A World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946, Dr. Gause later graduated from Emory University School of Dentistry in Atlanta. He practiced a short while in Atlanta before permanently resettling in St. Petersburg, Fla. He worked as sole practitioner for a number of years before joining with three of his former Emory classmates in 1974 to open St. Petersburg Dental Center, where he was the managing partner.

Dr. Gause is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce; a daughter, Carol Gause LeBoef; and a son, Jeffrey Curtis Gause.
