ADA News honored for excellence in yearly competition

The ADA News has earned three 2013 EXCEL Awards—two gold awards and a silver—for excellence in news and feature writing from Association Media & Publishing, a publishing trade group headquartered in Reston, Va.

"We received more than 900 entries, and your work displayed superior quality and innovation," Sarah A. Patterson, AM&P executive director, said in a May 1 letter to ADA Publishing announcing the awards. The letter was addressed to Michael Springer, senior vice president, Business and Publishing.

Winning entries included a gold EXCEL Award for a feature article by ADA News Senior Editor Karen Fox. Her story, "Emory Apologizes for History of Anti-Semitism at Dental School," spotlights the now-defunct dental school's acknowledgement of anti-Semitic practices reported from 1948-61.

The story centers on the experiences of Dr. Perry Brickman, an Atlanta oral surgeon who entered the Emory School of Dentistry in 1951, but ultimately earned his dental degree from the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry.

ADA News also received a gold award for overall excellence in news writing for three stories on the effects of Hurricane Sandy on East Coast dentists and dental practices. The stories were the work of ADA News Senior Editors Kelly Soderlund and Jean Williams, and Associate Editor Stacie Crozier.

Earning a silver EXCEL Award for feature writing was Senior Editor Kelly Soderlund whose story "Sandy Aftermath Recounted" described a devastating "new reality for thousands of dentists in New York and New Jersey" in the wake of the hurricane.

All these award-winning articles appeared in a single issue of the ADA News—Nov. 19, 2012—which can be accessed online. The 2013 EXCEL Awards will be presented at AM&P's 33rd awards gala, set for June 10 in Washington, D.C.
