What's the Code?

CDT courses featured at Annual Session

New Orleans—Dental team members who attend the ADA Annual Session this year will have the opportunity to learn how the CDT Code works, about submitting a change request and the process of maintaining the Code.

The ADA Council on Dental Benefit Programs will present Optimize Your Practice: CDT Code, Claims and More (course 6344) from 2-5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. There is no fee for the course, and participants are eligible to receive up to 3.5 hours of continuing education credit.

This course aims to help dental team members understand significant changes to the Code on Dental Procedures and Nomenclature; recognize procedure codes used to document and report common clinical scenarios; how to recognize and avoid claim form completion errors; and identify possible inappropriate use or misuse of the CDT Code by payers.

CDBP will also present a CDT Code Open Forum (course 6334) from 9-10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. There is no fee to attend. This interactive forum will provide an opportunity for dental team members to express their views about the CDT Code and Code maintenance process. For more information on these Annual Session courses, visit ADA.org/session.

The CDT Code is maintained, reviewed and revised each year by CDBP's Code Maintenance Committee, a 21-member multi-stakeholder committee comprised of representatives from the ADA, third-party payers, specialty and general dentistry organizations and dental education. The CMC held its annual meeting at ADA Headquarters Feb. 28-March 1 and began with an open forum where members of the public, dentistry and insurance community voiced their opinions on the action requests. The business session followed, where committee members discussed and voted on action requests.

The CMC's final action report on changes incorporated into CDT 2014 is available at ADA.org/3827.aspx. CDT 2014 is scheduled to go on sale in August.

Nov. 1 is the last day to submit requests for additions or other changes for CDT 2015. The next CMC meeting is scheduled for Feb. 27-March 1, 2014 at ADA Headquarters.
