ADA Member Profile

Richard Kohler, D.D.S.
Greenfield, Iowa
ADA member for 28 years

How many years have you been an ADA member?
28

Briefly describe your practice.
General practice in rural community of 2,000. We do most all dental specialties and treat all ages. My practice is a solo practice with 1 other dentist in our town.

What generation dentist are you?
First

What's the most-often asked question from your patients?
How's the basketball team going to be?

Richard Kohler , DDS
Twenty-eight year member and
state-champ basketball coach

What is the most interesting thing that has happened or you’ve done as a dental professional?
This is not dental related, but I have been the assistant high school basketball coach for 11 years. We have been blessed with great players and the last 2 seasons have finished 2nd and 1st in the Iowa State Basketball Tournament. Before last season it had been 54 years since our school had been to the boys state tourney and had never won a game there.

Why did you choose dentistry as a profession?
To help others and work with children's dental health.

What's the most difficult challenge you've faced in your practice?
Being a solo practitioner and not having any other professional to consult with or bounce ideas off of.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a dentist?
Teaching elementary school or a college basketball coach.

Name/describe your favorite CE course taken in the past two years.
I am in an implant study club and enjoy it immensely.

What do you do to relax?
Golf, fish, YMCA volunteer with youth, and coach basketball.

What is the most daring thing you’ve done in your lifetime?
Helping organize and build a YMCA in one of the smallest communities (that has a "Y") in America. It has turned out to be a great success and our community is very proud if it. There were many that said it couldn't be done and if built it wouldn't survive. It is an ongoing success story.

What are you most proud of?
How my basketball players have become great adults as parents and citizens.

Where is your favorite vacation spot or activity?
Warm climates where I can play golf and relax.

What concerns you about the future?
I worry about our youth that they don't have to work hard for things. I think it is good to challenge our children and give them goals to work toward. They need to be exposed to the outdoors and nature so they develop an appreciation.
