Rey M. Ortiz, DDS, ADA member

What is the most interesting thing that has happened or you’ve done as a dental professional?
Doing all of my lab work, including setting and flasking all of my denture cases. Gold work, for me, is Arts and Crafts. Dentistry has become my hobby. In so doing, I've lowered my overhead drastically and as a consequence, increased my net significantly. My other hobby is teaching dentistry to the International Dental Students at UCSF. These two things are the most interesting thing that has happened to me in dentistry.

Why did you choose dentistry as a profession?
Because of the Artistry that is involved in dentistry. My father was a dentist and was quite influential in my decision to become a dentist.

What's the most difficult challenge you've faced in your practice?
Managing employees. I've solved this problem by only hiring a front desk person. I've worked without an assistant for five years. At one point, I had seven employees including two Associates.

Name one unique thing on a wall in your clinic or displayed in your waiting room.
The most unique thing on my wall, is a teaching award I received that was named after an Admiral in the US Marine Corps, Ad. Reibe Award for clinical teaching. Unique, because we are both war veterans. He, WWII; I, Vietnam.

What is/was the most challenging aspect of dental school?
Juggling family life as a young dental student. I had two young children while a student at UCSF.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a dentist?
I would be a dental lab technician running my own business.

Name/describe your favorite CE course taken in the past two years.
Cosmetic Dentistry given by the Punjabi Dental Society February 26, 2006.

What do you do to relax?
Free diving for Abalone off the coast of California near the Sonoma coastline.

What is the most daring thing you’ve done in your lifetime?
Jump off a helicopter with a full pack of gear, while being shot at during the Vietnam War.

What are you most proud of?
Being a Veteran of the Armed forces. Serving my country is what I'm most proud of. Veterans Day is the most important holiday because if not for the Veterans, all of the other holidays will not exist, as we know it.

What is the last book you've read or are currently reading?
Alone in the Wilderness. Richard Proenekke's survival odyssey in Alaska during the 1960s.

Where is your favorite vacation spot or activity?
Baja California for fishing and relaxing at the beaches.
