Resources for Dental Students

Dental school is a serious commitment of time, energy, and money. Therefore, you need to use your time, energy, and money wisely—that's where the ADA can help. The ADA is the professional organization of and for dentists who are collectively committed to the public's oral health and the future of the dental profession.

ADA Resources for the Dental Student Member
The ADA offers a wealth of resources to help make a dental student's education easier and more rewarding. These resources are developed by dentists who have been through dental school and found a dental practice. You don't need to reinvent the wheel! Take a look at the selected benefits highlighted in the ADA Resources for the Dental Student Member booklet and see what the ADA can do for you.

The resources highlighted in this booklet, and more, are available to members by calling the ADA's toll-free number, 1-800-621-8099 x7470.

Reduced Dues for New Graduates
The ADA Reduced Dues Program allows recent graduates to become members of the ADA without having to pay full dues until five years out of school. The first full calendar year following dental school graduation, the national dues rate is $0; in the second year, it is 25 percent of full dues/assessment; in the third year, 50 percent; in the fourth year, 75 percent, and in the fifth year and thereafter, it is 100 percent. Most state and local dental societies offer similar reductions, and the program requires continuous membership from dental school graduation. Recent graduates who enter into a graduate program immediately following dental school graduation pay the graduate student rate of $30/year during the program, and begin the Reduced Dues Program schedule upon completion.  For more information visit www.ada.org/goto/join.

ADA Publications for Students

Dental Recap
An e-newsletter from the ADA’s Office of Student Affairs and the American Student Dental Association, Dental Recap highlights student-related issues of the dental profession.  This informative quarterly e-newsletter is sent to all ASDA/ADA dental student members.

Know the Drill
The Office of Student Affairs writes a “Know the Drill” column in the American Student Dental Association’s publication, ASDA News.  This column addresses hot issues and highlights ADA resources available to meet the needs of students.  Members can visit ASDA’s Web site to view PDFs of past issues of ASDA News.

Understanding Organized Dentistry
Do you have questions about the ADA and organized dentistry? Check out Understanding Organized Dentistry! This publication was developed in the spring of 2005, and it offers a wealth of information about the structural layout of the ADA , its Councils and Commissions, and the tripartite membership system. Additionally, there is a special section that details ADA dental school programs, seminars and publications.

State and County Demographic Report
The ADA offers a useful service that provides demographic and dental data by county. The reports include population by age, ethnicity, education and income demographics. Perhaps most beneficial of all: you can look at the number of active dentists in the county as well as the change in that number over the past 10 years. Additionally, you can learn about the average travel time and estimate cost of living so you can make an educated decision and know what to expect wherever you choose to practice. The reports are available from the Survey Center for a fee (a small investment when making a major life decision). You can order order via the ADA Catalog, or use the order form below.
