ADA SUCCESS: Dental Student Programs

Program Detail

The ADA offers a continuum of programs for dental students on-site at the dental school! The ADA’s goal is to provide enrichment to the dental education experience with programs that address student needs and interests. Two programs—one for freshmen and one for seniors—are available in 2007–08. The sophomore and junior programs will launch in 2008–09.

2007–2008 Academic Year
ADA SUCCESS: Smart Start for Freshmen
This two-hour program addresses financial issues, dental career options and tips for success in dental school. The agenda includes career opportunities and income information; postdoctoral training and specialty opportunities; student loans, level of debt and interest rates; budgeting and managing finances; causes and impact of stress; stress management tips and techniques and time management and effective studying.

ADA SUCCESS: Practice Management for Seniors
This full-day program addresses practice management aspects of dentistry and ethical aspects of dental practice. It also features useful information on ADA resources that are available to ADA members. The agenda includes practice location and acquisition/start-up; practice financing; practice marketing; recruiting and leading a successful dental team; production, collection and expense management; dental reimbursement; financial management, taxes and avoiding embezzlement; maintaining records, privacy and security; patient expectations and dentist responsibility; ethics – real life situations new dentists face and ADA resources for practice success.

2008–2009 Academic Year
ADA SUCCESS: Professional Preview for Sophomores
This two-hour program is designed to acquaint sophomore dental students on developing skills that will prepare them for the high-tech and high touch dental practice of the future. Students will learn ways to manage patient-related issues and the technology side of contemporary dental practice. Discussion will include various aspects of clinic during the last two years of dental school.

ADA SUCCESS: Career Strategies for Juniors
This two-hour program will focus on career decision-making. It will focus on CV-writing, interviewing for clinical positions or specialty programs, evaluating employment opportunities or associateships and negotiating compensation.
