National Board Dental HYGIENE Examination (NBDHE)

Step 1: Read the Candidate Guide
Please review the Candidate Guide below, specifically the Eligibility Requirements, Rules of Conduct, Test Regulations, Irregularities/Appeals, and the Testing Procedures.

During the application process you will be asked to confirm that you have read the Candidate Guide and agree to the rules and regulations contained within the document. Candidates are responsible for understanding the information contained within the Candidate Guide. Candidates that violate test rules or regulations may have their test scores voided and have to wait up to two years to retest.

Step 2: Apply for the Examination
Cost to apply: $175. Examination fees are non-refundable and non-transferable (no exceptions).


Step 3: Examination Dates
The following indicates the 2008 NBDHE administration dates. The National Board Dental Hygiene Examination is administered on a Tuesday.

The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations is preparing the NBDHE for computer administration early in 2009.

Step 4: Take the Examination at a Test Center assigned by the JCNDE

Step 5: Scores and Certificates
The examination fee covers a score report for you and the dental hygiene program director. The examination fee also covers score reports for three dental licensing boards, if they are requested on the application. Results are mailed approximately 6-8 weeks after you've completed the examination. To request additional score reports or National Board Certificates see "After the Examination" to the right.


Purpose of the Examination
The purpose of the examination is to assist state boards in determining qualifications of dental hygienists who seek licensure to practice dental hygiene. The examination assesses the ability to understand important information from basic biomedical, dental, and dental hygiene sciences and also the ability to apply such information in a problem-solving context.
