CAPIR Statement Opposing the Use of Smokeless Tobacco as a Smoking Cessation Technique

The Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations (CAPIR) has for years fully supported existing Association policy urging dentists to become informed about proven and effective tobacco cessation techniques and to effectively assist their patients to avoid or overcome addictions to nicotine.

Based on current documented scientific research confirming the significant oral and systemic health hazards of all forms of tobacco use, the Council is opposed to the use of smokeless tobacco as an alternative to cigarettes or as a smoking cessation technique.

The Council maintains that, in the absence of documented scientifically sound, randomized and controlled clinical trials demonstrating safety and effectiveness, it is unwarranted to advocate the use of smokeless tobacco as a smoking cessation technique.

For those particular patients who may opt for nicotine withdrawal therapy, the Council supports only the use of scientifically and clinically proven and effective nicotine withdrawal (replacement) products in conjunction with a comprehensive tobacco cessation program.

Finally, based on current scientific evidence, the Council believes that promotion of smokeless tobacco use for any reason sends an improper public health message.
