Three new leaders have stepped up to offer their expertise for the Dental Education: Our Legacy—Our Future initiative.
Dr. Leslie W. Seldin and Dr. David C. Johnsen are vice chairs for the national effort and Dr. Kenneth L. Kalkwarf is the new recipient partner chair. These leaders, along with co-chairs Dr. Cecile Feldman and Dr. Richard Haught and Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, honorary chair, will serve on the Our Legacy—Our Future Steering Committee through December 2014.
"The focus of Our Legacy—Our Future is to develop a philosophy, an attitude of philanthropy within the profession and with everyone who works with dentistry," said Dr. Seldin, advisory chairman of the Greater New York Dental Meeting and former ADA vice president (1992-93). "This initiative is just the setting of the seed for the long-term mission. We want to inform and encourage people to support the dental education system through the vehicle they feel most connected to in order to help the entire profession grow and thrive in the future."
"There are two very positive and important issues," said Dr. Johnsen, dean of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. "The effort is focused to raise awareness of private philanthropy for dental education and to strengthen the partnership between the dental practice community and the dental education community. It's a terrific era in dentistry and dental education is a pillar that can continue to strengthen the heritage of the profession."
"The successes we all enjoy are a result of the educational processes we experienced," said Dr. Kalkwarf, dean of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School and president of the American Dental Education Association. "The future of our profession is dependent upon a foundation provided by our educational system. Dental schools are excited to have our professional colleagues join the effort to maintain and enhance the quality of U.S. dental education."
Two new partners have also joined Our Legacy—Our Future.
The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry is a new recipient partner and the Ohio Dental Association Foundation has joined the effort as a facilitating partner, bringing the number of partners for the effort to 63.
