The ADA Foundation connected people and changed lives in 2006, dispersing nearly $1.5 million in grants and scholarships for dental education, access to care, research and charitable assistance.
Dental student Ryan Edmunds was one of the first 11 recipients of the new American Dental Education Association Academic Dental Careers Fellowship program funded by the Foundation to stimulate innovation in dental faculty development.
"The fellowship gave me an opportunity to experience what it is like to be a dental faculty member and has shown me that all dental professionals have a role in education, even those who are not full-time academicians," said Mr. Edmunds, who will graduate this year and begin a residency in periodontics.
"I wish that more students had this unique chance to experience being on the other side of education," he added, "and I am grateful to the ADA Foundation for their support through this entire year."
"We have been given a gift to serve mankind, and no one else can or will do what we do to preserve the public's health," said Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, ADA Foundation president. "It is up to us—to you and me—to embrace philanthropy, and to achieve something bigger than ourselves. Our connections to each other create change and improve lives."
Harris Fund for Children's Dental Health grants enabled nearly 190,000 children to receive preventive care and/or oral health education from 72 programs nationwide using more than 5,500 volunteers.
Eighty dental, dental hygiene, dental assisting and dental laboratory technician students received scholarships.
The ADAF awarded 43 disaster response grants to dentists and three disaster response grants to organizations plus 42 relief grants to dentists in need.
Three projects received funding for their proposals to review, integrate and consolidate existing scientific research relating to evidence-based dentistry in response to an ADA Foundation request for proposal.
