By Jennifer Garvin Dental Education: Our Legacy—Our Future reached its second major milestone of 2007 when it announced that the Maine Dental Association and South Carolina Dental Association are the 99th and 100th partners to join the fight to secure the future of dental education.
In July, the initiative—which is underwritten by the ADA Foundation, celebrated its first anniversary of raising awareness of the challenges facing dental education.
Our Legacy—Our Future was designed to promote a culture of philanthropy within the dental profession and solicit a call to action to address the issues. It was created to raise awareness of the importance of dental education to the profession and why it's important to give back. By encouraging the dental practice and dental education communities to work together, the profession is demonstrating this commitment.
The initiative also has seen a 35 percent increase in partner participation in the inaugural year and includes more than 95 percent of all U.S. dental schools and many dental specialty organizations among its 100 partners.
Although Maine doesn't have a dental school, MDA Executive Director Frances Miliano says her organization's scholarship and student loans funds fit perfectly with the philosophy behind Our Legacy—Our Future.
"I think it's important to join in the national effort and show that we have a unified front," Ms. Miliano said.
Our Legacy—Our Future and its partner organizations strive to collectively raise more than $500 million by the end of 2014 in order to address the issues facing the future of dental education.
It is not a fundraiser, rather Our Legacy—Our Future encourages interested donors to give directly to the partner institutions of their choice. All contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
