By Jennifer Garvin Keeping its promise to connect people and change lives, the ADA Foundation dispersed nearly $1.3 million in grants and scholarships in 2008 for research, education, access and charitable assistance programs.
"It is a privilege to be able to serve communities and individuals, and we are proud to be leaders in preserving the public's oral health," said Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, ADA Foundation president. "It is up to us—to you and me—to be models of philanthropy, and to achieve something bigger than ourselves. Our connections to each other create change and improve lives."
An innovative, three-year $300,000 Working Together for Oral Health grant program was developed by ADAF, and in 2008 the American Academy of Pediatrics received its first year installment of $17,850 to begin collaborative training of pediatricians in oral health risk assessment and prevention methodologies.
The American Dental Society of Anesthesiology Research Foundation received a $23,264 portion of its total $125,000 grant to create a pilot training course in airway and emergency management for general dentists who administer sedation and anesthesia.
Among other programs that benefited from the generous individual donations was the ADAF Charitable Assistance Program, which handed out $179,170 in relief grants to help dentists suffering from injuries and/or medical conditions, and $202,500 in disaster response grants to dentists and organizations that suffered property damage in disaster areas.
