By Stacie Crozier The third annual symposium convened by ADA's Give Kids A Smile team June 25-26 will focus on continuity of care and finding dental homes for children.
The Dental Trade Alliance Foundation and the ADA Foundation will host the symposium at ADA Headquarters.
The program will address how to refer patients for ongoing care, collaboration at the community level, community health needs assessment and getting parents and other caregivers involved in children's dental health. Speakers include Dr. Hazel Harper of the Deamonte Driver Dental Project in Maryland, Dr. Burt Edelstein of the Children's Dental Health Project in Washington, D.C., and Colleen McCauley-Brown of Public Citizens for Children and Youth in Philadelphia.
"Many children attending Give Kids A Smile events require extensive care that is simply not possible in the scope of many current GKAS programs," said Kevin Thomas, a member of the GKAS National Advisory Board and executive director of the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation. "Questions, issues and real life solutions for enhancing continuity of care opportunities will be explored, providing program directors with great tools to build on through their own events."
Dental professionals, educators, dental society staff, community/advocacy groups, GKAS program coordinators, safety net dental clinic staff, state dental directors, school nurses, case managers, Head Start staff and other community health stakeholders are encouraged to attend.
The symposium is free to participants and includes an hors d'oeuvres reception June 25 and breakfast and boxed lunches on June 26. Participants only pay for hotel and travel costs. (Applications for travel stipends are being accepted online through April 24; up to 10 stipends will be awarded.)
A discounted block of rooms at the Affinia Hotel, 166 E. Superior St., directly behind the ADA building, has been reserved for the symposium until May 15. Call 1-866-AFFINIA (1-866-233-4642) and mention the Give Kids A Smile Symposium when booking.
